ICE wins Innovate UK funding to develop an ultra-low vibration magnet system

April, 2023

Witney, Oxfordshire, UK

ICE, a leading designer and manufacturer of cryogenic systems, has been awarded an Innovate UK Smart Grant to fund the development of an ultra-low vibration optical cryogenic system with a vector rotate magnet. The 10-month project will aim to develop ICE’s existing DRY ICE DYAD cryostat through the integration of a 6-1-1 Tesla, 3-axis vector rotate magnet.

“We are delighted to have been successful in applying for an Innovate UK Smart grant via the ‘Industry Strategy Challenge Fund’” says Chris Busby, CEO and Co-founder of ICE. “This grant enables ICE to develop further the Ultra Low Vibration Dyad system by including a 6-1-1 Vector Rotate magnet. The ‘MagnetDYAD’ forms a crucial part of the ICE product roadmap and will compliment other investment spend on product upgrades and development in the coming year. It is part of the ICE growth strategy for the next three years. For ICE, this grant also confirms the UK Governments commitment to Innovation.”

MagnetDYAD, as the project is currently known, will accelerate the growth in the UK's quantum and nanotechnology sectors by delivering game-changing DRY cryogenic apparatus with an integrated vector rotate magnet. Achieving a base temperature of 1.3K, sample cooldown time of < 2 hours and world-leading sample manipulation and rotation. This cutting-edge technology provides a solution to very costly WET cryogenic systems which boil off large quantities of expensive and non-renewable Helium resources. Lower cost, DRY cryogenic apparatus with cutting edge capabilities will create UK leadership, enabling capability for quantum and nanotechnology sectors.

“I am thrilled to hear that ICE have received this grant to support the development of an ultra-low vibration magnet system. This innovative technology will answer market pull in research communities and the private sector, and I am excited that it is being developed right here in our community. I congratulate ICE on their success and look forward to seeing the ground-breaking work they will accomplish with this grant.” Robert Courts, MP for Witney and West Oxfordshire.
